Dovid Hoffman is joined by Allan L. Scherr, a distinguished computer scientist and founder of ALS Leadership. Allan, renowned for his expertise in large-scale project management, shares his extensive experience in leading major technology projects, including the development of the IBM MVS operating system. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Allan graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and earned his S.B. and S.M. degrees from MIT, where he focused on computer logic design. He was a key figure in Project MAC and earned his Ph.D. at MIT in 1965, researching the Compatible Time-Sharing System. His groundbreaking work earned him the Grace Murray Hopper Award in 1975. Allan joined IBM in 1965, contributing to the architecture of IBM System/370 and playing a pivotal role in the creation and management of MVS. His leadership extended to the development of IBM DPPX and later, as vice president of technology for IBM Consulting Group. Allan’s contributions earned him the title of IBM Fellow. After retiring from IBM, he served as senior vice president of software engineering at EMC Corporation and has been active in local politics.
